This is almost certainly not acetylene but hydrogen. That’s what the Hindenburg* had it in. Extremely flammable and explosive.

Edit: ok, based on the article, it was probably acetylene. My bad!

Indian here. People use hydrogen in balloons here. Not acetylene

Pretty sure that wasn’t acetylene as it’s heavier than air, and I’ve personally seen someone do that with balloons, and a ton of black smoke comes out, and floating ash. Unless those are fake floating for some reason.

This is an acetylene balloon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhpMORUQTr0

Acetylene and oxygen can be burnt together to produce temperatures high enough to be used in welding.

I hope no one was hurt

In Montana we sometimes fill car-dealership balloons with acetylene, attach them to real helium balloons, and attach a 10-15 foot long fuse. We light the fuse and let everything go. When it gets up to about-just-cant-see-it-anymore, it blows up and sends out a circular shockwave – very pleasant to watch… and then about 2 or 3 seconds later it hits everyone on the ground in the face, knocking some of them down.

Good times. In any event, from that experience I can rightly divine that this video does not have any acetylene in it.

Acetylene expansion is 1600 to 1. So I think it would have been a little more violent. Looking for input.

Considering that the world is rapidly running out of helium FOREVER (goes to upper atmosphere and blows away via solar wind) maybe it’s time for more explosive baloons

Hydrogen. Acetylene is a little too unsafe, a little too expensive, and a little bit heavier than air.

Acetylene is incredibly dangerous, especially in cylinders. In welding, teachers will scare newbies to death with how much damage acetylene can cause. Since it’s really easy to turn on an oxy torch and point the unmixed flame towards a cylinder.

If that was acetylene it’s likely they would all be dead / severely injured / permanently deaf.

Why is every gif I see of exploding balloons have Mexico or Mexicans involved. Is helium hard to get over there or it the other stuff really cheap.

For a few years for Independence Day we would fill up a bunch of balloons and string them in groups across our pond. Then we’d stand on the bank and shoot them with Roman Candles to make them go Boom. Basically this video but on purpose.
