For me, the dunes will always be the ultimate place to ride in the world. It’s like being on a roller coaster that you control. Not to mention the endless area you can ride in.

Edit: Also, wheelies. Always wheelies everywhere.

Aren’t we all “on top of the world”? Or maybe the bottom. Does it even matter? Why are we here? Brb, need to go consider this on my bike.

I love Glamis. I just hope you took this pic anytime other than the middle of the summer. I don’t think
I would enjoy it at 118F.

This and Ocotillo wells I’m going to miss. Have to move from California to North Carolina (job relocation) sweet shot, many memories there.

Does anyone remember virgin sand? Is that a thing any more, outside of ten minutes afterward in the middle of a wind storm? The days of riding through here and not seeing another soul for miles seem to be long gone, now it’s just a bumpy rutted map of everyone else’s path.

I still dream of riding in Glamis, Ocotillo Wells and the one beach on the central coast(can’t remember the name). All my friends growing up had dirt bikes and quads, but never an extra for a friend so I never go to ride a dirt bike or quad. 🙁

Anyone who can ride two wheels in the sand is a boss. I have very very limited experience on an old underpowered bike. Couldn’t really get out of 3rd gear on the 1979 IT250… But if I was out on the dunes on a newer bike with a paddle rear tire, oh the fun I would have. I just love the feeling of letting the bike dance and kind of being 1/2 in control the whole time. I mean sand dunes are like the World’s biggest playground.

Sand can also be a bitch. I lost a apple sized portion of the skin on my calf when riding on the back of an ATV up in Oregon years ago. And a few years after that, sometime around 2000, I got a sand-rail stuck in a goddamn bowl at Pismo, then blew the top of one of my dual carbs off, sucked sand in the engine and seized it. Then, driving the towing vehicle (jeep) on the way to get the sand-rail, the handle for the floor-jack, which was sitting neatly in the rear cargo area, burst clean through the rear window after hitting a mild bump. Oh the sand!

Pictures can never do this place justice, too difficult to see the shear size. I meet a bunch of friends out here every year. Used to be President’s day weekend but got too crazy. Now it’s weekend before or after.

Nothing like it. It used to be anarchyville but it’s chilled with the increased police presence.

For anyone saying summer is too hot, if you have good lights, you can go nocturnal and get the dunes to yourself in the summer. Or ride early morning and twilight evening and you will have perfectly smooth dunes completely to yourself!

Man! I remember some great Thanksgiving weeks there with a bunch of friends and ATCs — before they basically made Competition Hill illegal. The last time I was there, park rangers came through and made everybody disperse and threatened to arrest people if they didn’t. But it was awesome while it lasted.
