My dad used to have a bag full of empty ones in his office. When I was about five I decided take them and make ‘potions’ in them which were basically just piss and shampoo or handsoap. My mom found my potion stash under my bed one morning and opened one to see what I was doing with them. She spilled soapy piss all over herself, so my dad threw all the empty canisters away.

You can ball up a bunch of aluminum foil and jam it in there, put the lid on, then push a straightened paper clip through the lid into the foil. Turn on a large CRT TV, which creates a ton of static electricity. While holding the plastic part, rub the wire sideways all over the TV screen. It will collect the static electricity. Then you can touch the wire on someone’s skin and it will shock the shit out of them. This may be the most 80s thing ever.

A friend and I used to fill these with gun powder, poke a hole in the lid for a fuse, then duct tape the whole thing and they made a nice little bomb. Of course, baby food jars were always better, due to the shrapnel they caused and you didn’t have to duct tape them.

Ok I feel embarrassed for saying this…but I never knew that’s what those were. For as long as I can remember, I’ve had like 3 of them in my junk drawer filled with thumb tacks so I just assumed that’s what they sold thumb tacks in…. My entire life feels like a lie right now and I hate myself for being dumb and naive

I buried my first hermit crab in one of these when he died. It was my first pet death and I cried for the whole day about it, not to mention how traumatizing it is for a little kid to find out it’s dead by picking up a hermit crab and have it fall out of its shell suddenly. We buried him in a film canister in my back yard and made him a cross out of popsickle sticks. RIP Purple Head.

I have a few canisters left from many years ago, and protect them like they are gold! But when I was young, and they were plentiful, I used to make “bombs” out of them by unrolling firecrackers and crushing match heads and stuffing the metal canisters or plastic ones. They never blew up but man, they flew around crazy like a jet engine!.

I just realized why there are so many of these used at our company. We use them to store pin and plug terminals, relatively small items probably 100 to the container. Makes sense to use the same form/mold since nobody else uses them. That’s just decent engineering. Too bad they couldn’t have make them stackable from the start.

Oh man I wish these were still a thing. Dad used them all the time when I was little for taking rock, water, and soil samples. He worked for the state geological survey and they would collect these, kept them in a big tub on the ground floor. They were easy to clean out and reuse, or store for long periods of time. I still have a few with gypsum and various other things in them somewhere….
