Can you imagine how horrifying this is for your average cat? The cat is used to a still environment, now suddenly the whole world is moving around it.

The would be like if we could see ourselves hurdling though space. I’m sure lots of us would freak out if that happened

My cat does this to himself about once a month. He will sneak out the back door when I open it, then freeze about 5 ft away from the door and just gaze around in horror at the unexplained vastness of the outside. Sometimes I pick him up and carry him around the yard and give him a bit of a tour, but he always looks like he has just seen Jesus rise from the dead….pure awe

I know panting is bad for cats but whenever I take mine outside on a walk (which he LOVES and can’t seem to get enough of) he opens his mouth like this after a couple of minutes, even if it isn’t hot. Then he makes crazy sounds when I take him back in. Is he stressed despite wanting to be outside? Or just overwhelmed perhaps?

I’m pretty sure this is a cat in distress, possibly hyperventilating.

This poor cat. He/she is in severe distress– panting is a bad sign for kitties. When traveling with a cat who is not used to or gets freaked out on car rides, always put them in a cat carrier. Make sure the carrier can’t slide around during transport. The small space makes them feel a little more secure. Most cats like tiny places to squeeze into anyway, this will give them a sense of safety. For extra measure, put a dark sheet over the carrier to prevent them from seeing outside. This is a makeshift blind, the same concept used for frightened horses in scary situations. That’s why they tie cloth over their eyes when airlifting/leading out of a fire– to keep them from flipping out.

Is he… having fun? Or is he freaked out? A dog making this face means he’s pleased, but cats aren’t the same. Does the cat live with dogs and maybe sees them act like this?

Hey, let’s all post the same over-reactionary twaddle that we just did over on /r/holdmycatnip! Yeah!

Sure the cat is stressed, but cats are tough, resilient critters, and once he’s out of the car, he’ll forget all about it, and go back to knocking things off the counter.

If you were an inside only cat, this would be the equivalent of going out from your house to your garage and your garage blasts off and starts flying.

I feel so bad. This cat is having a panic attack not enjoying this ride. You are also making it worse holding him/her instead of letting them feel in control.

So awesome! We live in the city, so our cats are inside cats.

They can’t wait to get in the cat carrier. They kind of fight for it.

All cats react differently in a car. My Siberian didn’t like the carrier box so I opened the door and he just curled up on my lap for the rest of the trip while purring.
