What happens when art fights back against its critics? Apparently, some strange murder stuff, if the first trailer for Jake Gyllenhaal’s Velvet Buzzsaw is any indication.
Set to debut at the Sundance Film Festival later this month before premiering on Netflix in February, Velvet Buzzsaw takes place in an art world where “big money artists and mega-collectors pay a high price when art collides with commerce.” That high price? Murder. Gyllenhaal plays a snarky art dealer with big opinions who meets his match when the mysterious work left behind by an unknown artist comes into his life. Rene Russo, John Malkovich, Billy Magnussen, Daveed Diggs, Zawe Ashton, Natalia Dyer and Toni Collette all co-star — and most of them seem like grist for the mill (especially Collette’s character, who, um, gets hardcore murdered by a demon art installation in the trailer).
Written and directed by Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler), Velvet Buzzsaw is out Friday, Feb. 1. Start making some memes now to prepare. Here’s one:
