It’s official: the Genie is (thankfully) still blue in Disney’s 2019 live-action remake of Aladdin. During the Grammys, a trailer dropped revealing Will Smith as the Genie – a character made famous by the late actor Robin Williams – and it’s brilliant.
In the short clip, the characters of Aladdin (Mena Massoud) and Jafar (Marwan Kenzari) can be seen entering a cave where they meet the Genie for the first time. Smith then appears, lighting up the screen as he jokes: “You don’t know who I am? Genie, wishes, lamp, none of that ringing a bell?”
Smith shared a clip from the trailer on Instagram with the caption: “I told y’all I was gon’ be blue!! Y’all need to trust me more often!” Fans had previously feared that the fictional character was no longer blue following the release of an Entertainment Weekly cover last year, which depicted the Genie as a more human-like colour.
Directed by Guy Ritchie, the film, which also stars Naomi Scott as Jasmine, is set to hit cinemas on May 24. A live action remake of Disney’s The Lion King – starring Beyoncé, Donald Glover and Chiwetel Ejiofor – is set to grace the silver screen in July, too.
