Emma Watson has multiple strings to her bow – from acting to activism – she’s certainly a force to be reckoned with. Now, the Beauty and the Beast star has added another budding talent: writing. Taking to Instagram, she shared not only a must-read book of 2019 – Gloria Steniem’s Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions – but also confirmed that she’s written the foreward for it, too.
The actress, who is an active supporter of the Time’s Up initiative and #MeToo movement, launched her own book club last year in a bid to promote works by women of all backgrounds and ethnicities – even hiding some books in random places across London for fellow book lovers to find. Is it any wonder then that she’s now putting pen to paper herself?
Taking to Instagram, Watson shared the new book cover for Steinem’s book. Now in its third edition, the book is Steinem’s first essay collection, delving into topics such as genital mutilation, pay discrimination and feminism. According to Macmillian publishers, more than half a million copies have been sold since the book was first published in 1983.
The Perks of Being A Wallflower actress shared some of the foreward with her millions of fans, explaining that Steinem “makes what otherwise can be arduous and depressing reading into something not only relatable but enjoyable.”
Steniem, who founded Ms. Magazine and has spent her entire career writing championing women’s rights, something which Watson has long admired: “But I have come to believe it is through radical feminism and the radical nature of Gloria’s message, that the job of equality will get done,” writes Watson. “I used to think the citadel didn’t have to topple. Now I believe it just might and should, and that we need to let old ways of being die for something new to be born. This book contains ideas for that new road, even though some were written almost forty years ago.”
