The Nail Files: Back To Nude On The Red Carpet

Whilst dark nails (think OPI’s Lincoln Park After Dark and Chanel’s Rouge Noir) have traditionally been favoured at this time of year and have always been a popular choice for party nails, it seems there’s a new shade in town. Nude seems to be ruling the red carpet and, in fact, was also my personal colour of choice for most of 2018 (and even more evidence that beauty is becoming increasingly seasonless).

As the first awards of the year, the Golden Globes set the mood for beauty on the red carpet. So does last Sunday’s abundance of nude manicures suggest that the hue will overtake red and berry as the nail colour of choice for this year’s red carpets? It’s finally a flattering colour now that brands are offering more shade choices. Nude is not one colour, after all – a knock-on effect from the welcome and much-needed influx of foundation and concealer shade extensions, perhaps. So expect to see much more of this wearable (finally) colour.

The award for chicest set of nude nails has to go to Glenn Close. Accepting her Best Actress award with the perfect, modern nude manicure, her opaque, creamy nude nails perfectly complemented her trophy. Up next has to be our very own Golden Globe winner, Olivia Colman. Manicurist Julie Kandalec used Chanel‘s Le Vernis in Organdi on the British actress; a rosy nude that worked with Colman’s skin tone and offset her black Stella McCartney dress beautifully.

Other notable manicures were on Kaley Cuoco and Constance Wu. Manicurist Jolene Brodeur used the classic, almost legendary, nude, Essie Ballet Slippers, on Cuoco and Buttoned and Buffed on Wu.

Finally, it’s very important when wearing nude shades to get the shape of the nail right. An almond, short shape like Close’s or very short and neat nails like those worn by Penelope Cruz, Regina King and Dakota Fanning are good examples demonstrating a chic way to wear nude. There is one exception and that’s if you’re Jennifer Lopez and have nail expert Tom Bachik looking after your nails – then the manicure rules go out of the window.

Finding a good nude nail polish is similar to finding your perfect nude lipstick – a trial and error exercise – but here are some current favourites: CND Shellac’s Negligee, Romantique and Nude Knickers. Chanel’s Nuvola Rosa 588, OPI’s Put It in Neutral, Dior Vernis in Grège and Nails Inc’s Porchester Square.
